The Founding Mother of CRS and Her Story…

Children of the Rising Sun is led by Zina M. Davis “Mama Zina” with a mission and vision to strengthen early childhood educational opportunities and services to improve the quality of life for Detroit Families. Zina has been in the field of early childhood education for over 20+ years as an ECE teacher and director of other child- care facilities in the Metro Detroit area. Zina’s dream began when she saw the need of a more W-holistic approach to care for young children. In 2006, Zina opened her home as a license child care program that served the capacity of 12 children on the west side of Detroit.

She was the first home provider in Detroit to receive a 5-Star high quality rating with www.greatstarttoquality.org in 2013 and maintained that status for 4 consecutive years.

In 2014, Zina established CRSEC 501c3 to provide more resources an opportunities for the community. In 2018, Zina expanded her program into a center base that serves up to 56 children in Detroit. Zina plans to expand her program services into a leading design child care facility that would be accessible to families of all incomes and functions as an asset to the community. Zina’s passion and drive to serve children and families in a more innovative and inclusive methodology- is modeled and expressed through her program.

The Village is the Foundation

CRS believes in the necessity of family engagement in each child’s education and growth. We value participation from families and the greater community in the care and educational nourishment of our children. We ask that parents and/or other family members give volunteer time outside of scheduled field trips. If time cannot be volunteered, families can donate educational materials or healthy snacks as a substitute.

We also offer volunteer service hours for seniors as they bring wisdom and valuable teachings to inspire the children. This senior program is sponsored through the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) with www.mchsmi.org
